Not to rain on any romantic parades (in particular my own which is loud and pink and a 365 days of the year type gig), but it is said that our soul-mates are not the lucky ones shot in the butt by Cupid’s arrow or the love brought to life by some higher being that we are destined to find and fall for in every lifetime that we lead. Apparently, it all comes down to science.
According to whispers of research I’ve heard about over the years and have had confirmed on the BBC site here, our connection to the person we love has to do with a few factors. Smell (pheromones), symmetry (the golden ratio) and having a face similar to our own or that of our parents (our love map) is what makes us attracted to our partners. The look-alike notion is an interesting one that I chose to look at through the ever-publicised love lives of the rich and famous…
1: Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Leo DiCaprio and I thought Gisele was crazy to ever let him slip away. Then I saw her with Tom Brady and it really does look like the perfect pairing. If you look a little closer though… they could be brother and sister! Maybe there is something to this look-alike concept.
2: Eddie Cibrian and Leann Rimes
Marie and I are fans of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and think Brandi is just a tad bit fabulous so the scandalous affair that led Brandi’s beau Eddie Cibrian to leave her for Leann Rimes has always seemed a bit strange to me. Check out the above photo though – take that bone structure mixed with the similar shaped eyes and add it to the scientific lookalike formula and it starts to make sense.
3: Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
You hear Brad Pitt and you immediately think Team Jolie or Team Aniston. Remember back a little further though, when Brad and Gwyneth were an A-list power couple? Now, dig through those memories to the time when they were sporting matching haircuts! I guess they’re proof to the contrary when it comes to the claim of lookalikes being a perfect match.
4: Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson
Look at those matching profiles! Newlyweds was one of the original reality shows that I was hooked on and when I watched it I would think two things. The first being that these two were really meant for each other and the second being… ‘Damnnnnn they look alike!’ Unfortunately this couple didn’t last, joining Brad and Gwyneth on the list of those that look like each other but ended up unlucky in love.
If this were an experiment… well I’d be none the wiser really. It seems to work in some instances but not so much in others.
So in closing, here is a creepy picture of half of my face next to half of CB’s face. What do you think of us science?
